Do you have an email list? Are you staying in regular contact with your subscribers? How about social media, are you posting regularly? Guess what - Your competitors are and that is how they are building successful and profitable art businesses.
The art world as we know it is over. Galleries are closing, the establishments are upside down and agents and dealers are scrambling. Art collectors are shopping online with increasing frequency. They are reaching out to the artists they love directly to purchase their work.
This is an exhilarating time for us as artists. Exhilarating because we have more power than we ever have before. We now have the power to reach our ideal collectors directly without the need for galleries, agents or dealers.
With this new found power comes endless opportunity.
My name is Rachel Wilkins, I arrived in NYC with my art supplies and a suitcase full of ambition in the late 2000's. I was rejected by galleries, stiffed by shady art dealers and left feeling exhausted by the art-world red tape. I took my art business into my own hands, learned everything there is to know about art marketing and grew a six-figure business selling my artwork.
For the past decade I have been dedicated to helping artists just like you reach their ideal clients. I have worked with over 8,000 artists on two continents as an exhibit director, marketing coach and co-founder of a thriving art business. I've seen what works, and what doesn't.
There are a lot of coaches and 'experts' out there spouting 'quick-win' solutions to selling your art online. Let me be real with you for a second, there is not (nor do I believe there will ever be) a 'quick-win' solution for selling art. Anyone trying to sell you such a thing should be taken with a grain of salt. There are however, three basic pillars that give you the optimum opportunity at long-term art-world success. They are...
ATTRACTION: Post regular, relevant and engaging content online in order to attract the collectors that actually WANT to buy your work.
NURTURE: Stay in regular contact with your newfound collectors to build trust. It is a statistical fact that consumers including art collectors, prefer to buy from those that they feel they know, like and trust. The ONLY way to build trust with our newfound clients is to stay in regular contact with them via email.
SELL: When and only when our clients have been 'warmed-up' should we be selling to them. Ask yourself if a stranger lands in your inbox trying to sell you something are you likely to buy it? Probably not. The same principles apply for selling art online. Nurtured or 'warmed-up' clients are much, much more likely to buy from you.
If you are anything like I was. few years back, the idea of coming up with content to post on social media or crafting an engaging email to send to your subscribers sounds like pulling teeth. Because lets be honest...
Sometimes you are just too busy
Sometimes life gets in the way
Sometimes you just don't feel inspired to post, share or write an email
But ask yourself, if you don't post, don't send out regular emails, how much money are you leaving on the table? How many opportunities are you missing out on? And are you ok with that?
